Anne Geddes Donates original for DCA SOS Benefit Auction

Ann Geddes formally from North Queensland herself, donates an original print valued at $7500 to the DCA SOS benefit auction that will be hosted at the college on the 18 March 2011. The print will carry no reserve and is one of the feature items.

Frost* Design has big heart

Frost* Design have come to the aid of Design College Australia's Global SOS Benefit Auction by donating a beautiful typographical sculpture, aptly named "Poke". Not only have Frost* Design donated this brilliant sculpture, they also organised shipment from NSW to QLD via Grace Fine Art who kindly donated their services free of charge. If that's not enough, Sally Burleigh Public Relations who represent Frost* Design have also put their hand up to promote the event in aid of the recent Queensland floods. WOW a huge thanks to all, gotta say a special thanks to Kate from Frost* (and of course Vince) who have given their all for this event... should be a hoot.

Fashion in the Gardens

Over the weekend our full time photoimaging students ventured
out to the lush Brisbane Botanical Gardens to shoot a hypothetical
spring fashion parade. The students will need to create an Adshell
advertisement using the images shot on the day. Can't wait to see the final results.

Our talented Part Time Certificate IV and Full Time Photoimaging students needed to design and create a classic movie poster . The style and feel of their posters needed to capture the fashion and the roaring 1920s Gangsta era. The results were truly inspiring.

Design Students Movie Artwork Workshop

Last week, our design students took a week out from standard classes to undertake a printing workshop in our dedicated letterpress and print studio. They were producing artwork submissions for t-shirts and DVD inserts for the showing of the documentary ‘ Typeface,’ which will come to Brisbane as part of the 2010 Icograda Design Week. DCA students have the opportunityto participate in many industry briefs, and often undertake workshops in specialist areas.

Photography Architecural Workshop

Each term our photoimaging students attend a weekend workshop. The most recent workshop was focused around archiectural photography and we were lucky to have Shane Holzberger, one of Queensland's leading architecutral photographers, host the this workshop. Although it was a long and somewhat exhausting weekend, students enjoyed themselves and learnt a great deal from Shane.

Design College are Top Dogs!!

Doggetts Paper ran a competition for students from Queensland's design schools to design and make paper dogs to feature in their 2010 Calendar. Eight out of the 14 dogs chosen to be featured were that of DCA students. This is great work from our students and a testament to DCA's idea generation and hands on approach.

History Never Repeats - Or does it

This week was History Presentation Week at Design College Australia. Students were given a brief to research an historical or contemporary design issue and deliver a presentation to fellow students and faculty. Topics included various art movements such as Art Nouveau, The Bauhaus, illustrators Cecilie Ellefsen and Mario Hugo and Brisbane designers such as Nicole Cox.

Students are always quite apprehensive about these presentations - let's face it who likes studying history - but once they are into the project they quickly developing an appreciation for it and realize that so much of what took place in the past shapes what happen in design today.

Design College student Jake Reston is holding a joint exhibition with Jonathan Powell and Josh Rufford at Baboon Salon during November. Jake is a student with lots of passion and lots of natural talent and this is reflected in his work.

Graffiti

Graffiti today is listed as many things; to the majority of the world graffiti is considered a crime. However, to a growing minority it is seen as an art form and an outlet to express one’s thoughts and feelings. Like an artist painting on canvas, a graffiti writer takes pride in their work. They feel that they have to paint, it agitates them and it becomes an addiction.

This photo essay follows one graffiti writer and his processes - how he chooses a spot, his paint, and how he deals with the positives and negatives of graffiti. The shots were taken to protect the graffiti writers identity. My role was to capture this graffiti writer's journey and tell his story.
